A Pillar of the Club Since 1975
Racing has been at the heart of the West Bay Yacht Club since its first season in 1975, and fifty years on, the fleet is as competitive and as friendly as ever. On summer Monday evenings the start line on Greenwich Bay fills with boats of every size, from dedicated race boats to family cruisers, all sailing under PHRF handicaps so that preparation and good sailing, rather than boat size, decide the results.
The Race Committee scores every race and posts the results here the same week, together with weekly race reports, series standings and an archive of past seasons. Whether you skipper your own boat, crew for a friend or have never raced before, there is a place for you on a WBYC start line.
Racing Programs
Summer Series
Twelve races on Monday evenings from early June through the end of August, with the first start shortly after 6 pm. Boats race in two classes, Spinnaker (Class S1) and Non-Spinnaker (Class A), on courses of roughly 2 to 5.5 nautical miles around Greenwich Bay. Finishing times are corrected for each boat's PHRF rating; each boat's three worst scores are discarded, and nine finishes are required to qualify for series awards.
Fall Series
Four races in September in the same two classes, usually on Monday evenings. One score is discarded and three finishes are required to qualify. Cooler air and a steadier breeze make it a favorite with many crews.
Annual Regattas
The season also includes four stand-alone events: the Lady Skipper Regatta in August, sailed with women at the helm; the Rainone Solo/Twin for single- and double-handed crews; the JFK Memorial “Around the Island” Race, about 20 nautical miles around Prudence Island in memory of Jake, Fred and Ken; and the Pumpkin Patch Regatta, the traditional season finale, where costumes are encouraged.
